Students in 3rd grade compared and contrasted portraits by Frida Kahlo and Kehinde Wiley. Students discussed how to make a portrait tell more about the person, such as including a background or item that represents the subject's culture, identity, or background. Students also learned about how they can create their own art style that represents their personality and identity. Using Google, students researched backdrops that were reflective of their identities, and used digital software to combine self portrait photos with their chosen backdrops. Students then explored a wide variety of media to draw and color their self portraits from their digital reference images.
