Students in grades 6-8 were introduced to careers in the animation industry, and dove headfirst into the processes that visual development artists use when creating feature-length animation films. Students chose a fairytale and applied a "twist" to it, in order to create their own character designs and environment designs based on pre-existing stories. Students learned about the elements of art and the principles of design through group activity work, and explored color theory and how it applies to visual development. Students created several rough concept sketches and thumbnails before arriving on finalized designs, and the project culminated with a collage, where students placed their original characters into their own original scenes.
